Extended Battery Performance

The Apple Watch Ultra 4 features the longest battery life of any Apple Watch model, offering up to 45 hours of workout tracking. This extended duration allows users engaged in prolonged activities to rely on the device without frequent recharging.

Advanced Heart Rate Sensing

The Apple Watch Ultra 4 features the most accurate heart rate sensing in a wearable device, utilizing larger, power-efficient green LEDs within its optical heart sensor. This hardware upgrade enables the watch to take background heart rate readings every five seconds throughout the day, marking the most frequent background sensing ever implemented for an Apple Watch. Compared to the previous generation, this represents 60 times more frequent background heart rate readings than the Ultra 3 model. Additionally, the device tracks Heart Rate Variability (HRV) as often as every five minutes, which is 24 times more frequent than its predecessor.

Precision GPS and Audio Intelligence

The Apple Watch Ultra 4 features the most accurate on-device GPS found in a sports watch, specifically designed to enhance navigation for outdoor pursuits. A key feature of this precision is its ability to automatically detect when a user arrives at a track; upon detection, the device combines Apple Maps data with precision GPS to deliver what Apple describes as the most accurate track running experience. This integration ensures that users receive optimized guidance and tracking while engaging in structured running activities. In addition to advanced location services, the watch is powered by the S11 chip, which Apple identifies as its most powerful wearable chip. While this processor primarily powers the Health Sensing System, it also enables new Audio Intelligence features scheduled to arrive later this year. These audio capabilities are designed to help users remember key moments from their conversations and stay alert to important sounds in their environment. The S11 chip’s processing power supports these intelligent functions alongside other health metrics, such as measuring heart rate every five seconds using larger, power-efficient green LEDs on the optical heart sensor.

Software Integration and Future Updates

With watchOS 27, Apple Intelligence powers Siri on the Apple Watch, bringing personal context understanding and broad world knowledge directly to the wrist. The S11 chip, described as Apple’s most powerful wearable chip, also enables new Audio Intelligence features arriving later this year. These features are designed to help users remember key moments from their conversations and stay alert to important sounds. Additionally, a redesigned Health app on iPhone arrives later this year, including a new Longevity tab with a Health Age feature that shows how metrics are tracking relative to a user’s age.
