Display Architecture and Dimensions

The iPhone Duo introduces the first foldable design in the iPhone lineup, featuring a dual-display system that expands from a compact form to a large canvas. When closed, the device utilizes a 5.4-inch outer display that delivers more than 90 percent of the screen area found on the standard iPhone 18 Pro. Upon opening, it reveals a 7.6-inch inner display, which Apple describes as the largest and thinnest ever for an iPhone, offering a canvas 50 percent larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max. The device is constructed with a Grade 5 titanium frame and hinge cover, while the displays are protected by Ceramic Shield on both the front and back surfaces. Additionally, the inner display features a scratch-resistant coating and a special nano-texture finish designed to minimize glare. This architecture supports a posable design that allows for seamless transitions between displays and orientations.

Hardware Components and Materials

The iPhone Duo is constructed with a Grade 5 titanium frame and hinge cover, providing structural integrity for its foldable design. Both the front and back surfaces are protected by Ceramic Shield, while the inner display features a scratch-resistant coating to maintain clarity during use. The device carries an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance, ensuring durability in various environments.

The hardware is powered by the new A20 Pro chip, which is built on the latest 2-nanometer process and offers a 50 percent increase in unified memory bandwidth compared to previous generations. To manage heat generated during high-performance tasks, the device incorporates an advanced thermal management system featuring a custom-designed vapor chamber (VC) and a dual-battery architecture.

A20 Pro Chip and Thermal Management

The iPhone Duo is powered by the new A20 Pro chip, which is built on a latest-generation 2-nanometer process. This architecture delivers a 50 percent increase in unified memory bandwidth compared to previous generations. To manage the performance demands of this processor, Apple implemented an advanced thermal management system featuring a custom-designed vapor chamber (VC). This hardware configuration supports Pro-level performance and efficient operation for AI-powered features.

Battery Life and Power Architecture

The iPhone Duo utilizes a dual-battery architecture, featuring high-energy batteries positioned on both sides of the device. This design choice is intended to maximize internal space efficiency while further increasing overall battery capacity. The system relies on the synergy between Apple’s custom silicon and energy-balancing algorithms to ensure seamless collaboration between the two power sources.

This architectural approach supports extended usage times that vary depending on which display is active. When utilizing the 7.6-inch inner screen, users can achieve up to 31 hours of video playback. Conversely, when using the outer display, the device offers an even longer duration of up to 44 hours for video playback. These figures highlight how the power management system adapts to different usage scenarios, providing Pro-level performance alongside all-day battery life.

Software Features and Release Timeline

The iPhone Duo runs on iOS 27, which introduces Split View multitasking to the platform. This feature allows users to run two apps side by side or combine displays for a larger viewing area. Users can also quickly switch between apps, open two windows of the same app (such as Safari), and save app combinations for later use. The device integrates Touch ID into the side button for secure authentication whether it is open or closed. It also features Camera Control to quickly launch the camera, including a new Siri Camera mode that allows Siri to see what the user sees to answer questions and take action. Later this year, the iPhone Duo will support Apple Pencil with USB-C, enabling users to take notes, sketch, or mark up documents on either display. Preorders opened on October 16, with official retail availability beginning on October 23 in Star White and Night Sky colors.
