Platform Compatibility with Ubuntu 24.04

NVIDIA Isaac ROS 5.0 introduces official support for ROS Lyrical and Ubuntu 24.04, providing developers with a direct path to adopt the latest robotics operating system platform. This update allows teams to continue accelerating demanding robotics workloads using NVIDIA accelerated computing while migrating to newer software standards. The release was announced at the ROSCon conference in Toronto, Canada, marking a significant step for the open-source physical AI ecosystem.

Agent-Driven Stereo Perception Adaptation

A new FoundationStereo fine-tuning skill enables AI agents to assist developers in adapting stereo perception models to specific camera configurations and environments. This capability allows for more accurate perception tailored to a developer's unique robotics application without requiring extensive manual tuning. By leveraging this agent-ready workflow, teams can streamline the process of optimizing sensor data for their particular hardware setup.

Accelerated Object Pose Estimation

The FoundationPose foundation model now includes an agent-ready inference library that significantly enhances object tracking capabilities. This update enables robots to perceive and track the position and orientation of objects up to 5.5 times faster than previous iterations. The improved speed supports more responsive interactions in dynamic environments where real-time spatial awareness is critical for safe operation.

Reusable Robotics Development Workflows

New NVIDIA Isaac skills for setup and manipulation provide reusable workflows that both developers and AI agents can utilize to complete complex robotics tasks. These standardized procedures help accelerate the development cycle by offering preconfigured methods for common operational requirements. The integration of these skills into the Isaac ROS 5.0 toolkit supports a more collaborative approach between human engineers and autonomous systems.

Ecosystem Integration and Deployment

Isaac ROS 5.0 expands deployment across the NVIDIA Jetson platform, ensuring that advanced AI capabilities remain accessible at the edge. The release also highlights partnerships with hardware providers like RealSense, which is optimizing its D585 Pro cameras for Isaac ROS compatibility. This broader ecosystem support helps developers build perception, navigation, and manipulation applications with greater confidence in hardware-software alignment.

Intrinsic Core: Open Source CNC Tending Reference

Isaac ROS 5.0 includes Intrinsic's Open Machine Tending Solution, a reference application for computer numerical control machine tending. This solution is part of the newly released Intrinsic Core, an open-source suite of preconfigured runtime services and capabilities designed to accelerate industrial robotics applications.

ZED Camera Integration via NITROS Standard

Stereolabs ZED cameras natively support NITROS, NVIDIA's high-speed data format for Isaac ROS, which is now built on the rosidl::buffer open standard. This integration allows depth and images to remain in GPU memory as they move through the pipeline, ensuring processing power is directed toward scene understanding rather than pixel shuffling.
